History/Key Points: Mewtwo came to be during the climax of Team Rocket's occupation of Kanto. Having infiltrated the region's Gym hierarchy and created command centers in its major cities, the criminal organization set its sights on three key projects to create Pokemon superweapons.

One of these three projects was Mewtwo. From a scant few cells from the "phantom" Pokemon Mew, patched with his own genes where the sample was incomplete, the fallen Gym Leader and Team Rocket geneticist Blaine created a Pokemon designed for battle.

Of course, nothing went as planned. Shortly after waking up for the first time, Mewtwo turned its "unmatched" battle capabilities on the very lab it was created in, then escaped into the wild. Possessing a savage, vengeful personality, an innate desire for victory in combat, and a particular dislike of humans like the ones it associated with its first unpleasant experiences, it then reappeared in Cerulean City, where it razed the city's northwestern sector to the ground.

It was pursued all the while by Blaine, who had defected from Team Rocket after Mewtwo's escape. The process that had implanted some of his genetic material into Mewtwo had also caused his arm to be infested with Mewtwo cells, establishing a psychic link between the two that allowed him to track Mewtwo's location. He was joined by the young soon-to-be-Champion Red outside Cerulean Cave, where the two battled Mewtwo and Red was able to capture it. Mewtwo was returned to Blaine to be rehabilitated and raised - after having met a worthy opponent and example of a Pokemon Trainer in Red, as well as its genetic "brother" in Blaine on less unpleasant terms, Mewtwo became calm, and allowed Blaine to bring it to his laboratory on Cinnabar Island.

For the next three years, Mewtwo lived there, being trained and tamed while Blaine investigated their psychic link. That link, unfortunately, was inflicting stress on both their bodies; Blaine bore the brunt of it, as the Mewtwo cells in his arm spread up to his shoulder, on track to eventually take his life.

Two years into this period in his life, Mewtwo was involved in a major battle when Blaine joined the young trainer Yellow in the fight against the villainous Lance. Despite being limited to an active battle time of three minutes by the strain of their psychic link, Mewtwo seemed to enjoy the intense fight as it lent its power to Blaine's strategies. After Blaine passed out from the exertion and a ploy by Lance rendered their three minutes of battle wasted, Mewtwo jumped forward, wanting to continue the battle, but then relented and returned itself to its Pokeball, prioritizing Blaine's well-being over its own hunger for victory.

Mewtwo's Pokeball was then carried around by Yellow for the rest of the battle with Lance, during which she confided her worries in it and it wordlessly offered encouragement and guidance.

The link between Mewtwo and Blaine was finally severed when Blaine made contact with Entei, which used its "healing flames" to purge the malicious cells from Blaine's body. At this point, Mewtwo was able to leave Blaine's lab without feeling pain and distress, and it flew off into the wild to explore the world. It developed telepathic abilities, which it attributes to the experience of being parted from Blaine and spending a little over a year and a half alone.

It reappeared later in the Sevii Islands in response to a resurgence of Team Rocket activity. There, it joined forces with Red to beat back Team Rocket and investigate the Pokemon they were using, Deoxys, which Mewtwo suspected to be another product/victim of the group's Pokemon experimentation. After fighting a number of battles, including a 1v1 against Giovanni and Deoxys during which Mewtwo named Red its trainer and took commands from him, they retrieved Deoxys from Team Rocket control. As the virus Pokemon left Red, Mewtwo, and their allies, its freedom was threatened by one remaining Team Rocket admin, who attempted to capture it. Mewtwo jumped ahead of the humans to intercept an attack meant for Deoxys, and the collision of its powers with that attack produced a strange effect that turned Red and his allies to stone.

Enraged by what had been done to them, Mewtwo pursued the Rocket admin as she fled the Kanto region.

Personality:

Mewtwo's Pokedex data claims it has a "savage heart", and that's not untrue even for the turned-hero version found in Pokemon Special. When it communicates telepathically, its precise word choice can make it sound cool and eloquent, but Mewtwo's actions show it to be driven strongly by emotion - and its emotions run hot. Whether it's anger, excitement, or protective fervor, Mewtwo feels it intensely, and that intensity shines through in its decisions and mannerisms. Emotion becomes desire, desire becomes conviction, and conviction becomes action, whether that action is leveling an entire sector of Cerulean City out of frustration, bloodlust, and resentment towards humans, or whether that action is pushing through a near-mortal injury to continue fighting a meaningful battle.

Despite its incredible power and intense demeanor, Mewtwo is a young Pokemon, and has rapidly grown in personality over its short life, and continues to be open to growth and change. When it's at its most relaxed and aimless, it's motivated by curiosity, such as when it decided after leaving Blaine to work towards understanding its roots and finding a life purpose. Its attention is drawn to people most strongly when they pique its curiosity by being different from what it expects - though Mewtwo can be standoffish, mistrustful, and impatient, it's not reclusive, and doesn't turn away from opportunities to learn something where it sees them.

Besides the relative calmness Mewtwo finds in seeking answers to questions, it's also learned to temper its high emotions by prioritizing people and places it cares about. It forms rare but strong attachments, and directs its instincts for battle towards the preservation of those attachments, turning its anger on whatever threatens them instead of trying to suppress its hot-headed nature. And it does feel anger - once Mewtwo becomes attached to someone, it also becomes fiercely protective of them and will retaliate against wrongs done to them, as when it chased Sird between regions for anywhere from months to years after she attacked Red and his friends.

Mewtwo doesn't just see people in terms of how much it likes them. It being a Pokemon, there's another dimension to any relationship it forms with a human, separate from its affection for them - and, given Mewtwo's aggressive nature, often more important. Essentially, it's trust; whether Mewtwo can understand a person and put enough faith in their motives and judgment to work with them on the fast-paced, emotionally intimate level of Pokemon battle is a major part of how he sees and feels about people. Mewtwo highly values this kind of trust, enough to return it with absolute obedience in battle, and reserves use of its telepathy largely for those it puts in that category.

Though it might feel affection for or duty to those it considers too "weak" to be good trainers, it isn't shown to trust them in this critical way. Mewtwo was created to be used as a weapon, and it's very aware of itself as an object of power that would benefit most trainers more than they could ever benefit it, so it feels a certain distance between itself and humankind as a whole.

Gem: Kunzite, which is a fairly "young" gemstone documented as recently as the early 20th century, similar to how Mewtwo is a very young Pokemon.

Power Considerations:
Telepathy - Mewtwo can project its thoughts as words into other people's minds.

Floating - Mewtwo can control the speed and force of its descent while falling.

Weapon Manipulation - Mewtwo can distort the shape of its default weapon, bending it to wrap around objects or strike from different angles.

Extra: Mewtwo is consistently referred to by other characters in Pokespe as "it", so that's what I'll use for narration etc.

Writing Sample: Threads one and two.
